Art for Art's Sake

Venice, 12 August 1949

Peggy paces back and forth in the salon of her newly acquired home.  “Where are those painters?”  She looks around at the curls of paint clinging for dear life to the plaster walls, taking notice of their less fortunate comrades lying on the cold stone floor below.  There is an air of neglect one would expect in a three hundred year old palazzo, but all Peggy can see is her masterpiece.

She checks her watch again, “10 a.m.  They’re two hours late.”   She crosses the empty foyer from one corner to the other, then thru the soon-to-be dining room and finally steps onto the terrace off the back.  Fifty yards away she spots two men dressed in white overalls paddling a small boat down the busy canal.  “Finally!” she screams, knowing that they can’t hear her.

“You’re late!”, Peggy snaps.  She rushes the painters from one room to the next recounting how each is to be finished.  She is several rooms ahead of them when one of the painters whispers, “I hear she’s going to hang some ugly abstract paintings in this old place.”  Peggy pokes her head around the corner and quips, “Those ugly paintings need a beautiful place to hang, so I suggest you get started”.

What's Black, White and Chic All Over...?

Sometimes the most dramatic and memorable creations are the result of pure and simple combinations. The cabin in our minds should celebrate that concept and lately we’ve been completely smitten with the classic pairing of black and white. On a recent visit to The Mark Hotel in New York City, we fell in love with Jacques Grange’s sophisticated and glamorous high contrast creation. After a few cups of Black coffee that afternoon… and a black and white cookie (no joke) we came to the realization that maybe this duet has the upper hand. After all, what other marriage has eternally remained chic and stylish, continues to feel fresh and current, while remaining a true classic.

Greener Pastures

We heard a rumor that Spring arrived this week, but Old Man Winter just won't give up.  We're so ready for our second favorite season of the year to begin (second only to Fall) because there is a real feeling in the air that something is about to happen.  Each evening the sun stays up for just a little bit longer, spring bulbs are starting to pop up in the most unexpected places and branches that have remained dormant all winter are now exhibiting signs of life.  This is the time of year when we pack up our sweaters, open the windows to let the fresh air in and give the house (and our minds) a good cleaning.  Here's hoping that this April's showers bring you plenty of figurative flowers.

Tuft Love

As we posted before....we're a little in love with the red tufted sofa in the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire's private entrance at Chatsworth.  Tufting is a little bit romantic, a little bit gentlemen's club and a LOT a bit of look.  We've pulled together some of our favorites.  Enjoy!
